16 BIT explores techno as a socio-political and cultural phenomenon and the circumstances that gave rise to a form now ingrained in our collective consciousness.
Techno’s role in societal shifts across the world runs much deeper than soundtracking a night out.
At its most incisive, it confronts inequality and discrimination.
It’s the sound of a decades-deep transatlantic cultural exchange. Its roots are in oppressed communities, scientific research labs, and avant-garde circles alike. It gave a voice to the Black community in Detroit, and it embodied the liberation of reunification as the Berlin Wall fell.
16 BIT communicates these ideas starting in the pre-techno era and its DIY spirit.
16BIT is a dance piece deeply immersed in the movement, offering the audience the opportunity to embody the music’s physicality and how that continuous physicality on different bodies can represent the virtuosity of a collective whose perseverance and exhaustion becomes hypnotic.
